Window installation questions

Dear Friends,

I am restoring my 1947 Tourette. In order to upgrade it, I'm installing some nice new windows. Here is the root of my question: In order to install the windows, I have to carefully cut the aluminum and remove the aluminum angle struts that were part of the original design. Question one: If I put the aluminum angle back on the door (removing the part that will be needed for the installation of the window) do you think this will be sturdy enough? Question two: should I put a bead of silicone caulk on both sides of the aluminum where the window and trim ring meet in order to further seal out the elements?



You can, hopefully, see the aluminum angle in the image above. I am planning to remove the rivets, which hold it in place, cut the opening for the window, then trim the aluminum angle so that the window will fit snugly and then re-install it.

Really appreciate your insights.

I've learned through reading many, many posts that the butyl tape is the key. I've ordered it from an RV place, but I'd love some guidance from you all on whether or not the door will be sturdy enough with the slightly modified strut on the door.

What size is the existing window rough opening; the new window RO; and the door overall?

Might give a better idea.

Seems that keeping it original is not a concern.
