Installing pre-made windows and doors

Postby ramtaajogi » Sat Jul 13, 2013 10:49 am

Hi. I just started building my teardrop (will post pictures soon) and wondering how I will fix my pre-made windows and doors. I purchased these doors and windows http://teardroptrailerparts.com/Windows___Doors.html

My side walls are 3/4 birch (from home depot) and will have 1/2 insulation on the inside covered with 5mm ply. My guess is that the screws they supplied are very short for my application. Also, I do I just then screw the inside frame to the door and the compression fit will hold the door in place?

thanks

screw the windows to the thicker piece of wood, my doors are made of 1/4" ply inner and outer skins with a 1X2" select pine frame, after I locate and cut the window hole in the door, I frame the window with more 1X2's to give the window screws something to grab.
I'm replacing a door now and considering the "sailboat" style windows instead. cheap, lighter, and I can make them any size I can buy plexiglass or glass in. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=51721&p=953326&hilit=sailboat+window#p953326

No, do not drill anything on the outside. All the screws go through the trim ring from the inside and nothing goes into the wood. I used the same doors from Vintek. Not sure about the windows but I assume they go on like the doors with a trim ring that fits on the inside. I installed my doors directly to my 3/4" sidewalls without insulation since that is how the doors that I ordered were meant to fit. I believe the inner ring is supposed to fit against the corresponding outline inside the door. The self tapping screws then go through the holes in the inner ring and tap into a V-groove in the door. The compression of the seals holds everything in place. I couldn't get the screws to start so I drilled an undersized pilot hole in the V-notch to get them started. Installing the door is a two person job with one outside holding the door and one inside drilling the screws. For your application if you are trying to span the total thickness of your wall, I suggest you call Frank Bear at Vintek and get his advice. I found him to be very willing to help with installation questions. I believe they make a ring for thicker walls.

Their ad says they can provide trim rings for any wall thickness up to 2 1/4". Call Frank and tell him what you have and he will tell you which ring to buy. He may swap for your old rings if you want to ship them back.

It really doesn't matter. If you order another size from Vintage technologies, you get to wait two month for them to send you the wrong size anyway.

And when did they start giving you screws with the door?
