Finally Started

Well I finally started the restoration on the Orphan. Got the floor out yesterday. Checking out the galley, I found a slid out shelf. Suprise. suprise

Gage, it looks as though your orphan will need a lot on TLC to make it happy. Your project will keep you busy and out trouble. Whay year do you think it is?

What am I looking at in the third picture down? Looks like the side has a box that is way over the side????

Nice counter. Perhaps that would be better than loosing all the cabinet space.

Miriam, you had me scratching my head there for a minute. Like Arthur says, it's the door. It just happened to be open. And Jim, it's not TLC that is needed but major internal reconstruction.

Looks like a good project, Gage, but it'll be a long one. Bet you were really surprised to find that slide out counter top. Neat idea, even if only for a smaller one.

Wow....what a deal Gage!!! How long do you think it will take? I'm pretty sure that is at least a One Alaska Winter type of effort...or in my case maybe two!!!

Looks like a fun project Gage...in the 3rd photo...is that channel with the flanges up?...might be an idea to drill some small drain holes in it if you don't flip it...might take on water and hold it....keep us posted...gonna have it done for the IRG? Take care...Doug

Well, if I was to work on the Orphan 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, I could probably get it done in about three weeks. But, beings how I'll be also working on the Santa Fe and the Glasspar, it'll most likely take about a year. I also work a part time job where I'm on call 24/5 (I deliver new cars sold over the internet. Heck of a job. Just think, getting paid to drive new cars 3 to 4 days a week.)

As for the other questions asked. I believe the teardrop to have been built in someones garage in the early 50's (because of the fenders). I'm not going to change the outside any becaused of the type of construction used by the builder. Example being, the roof skin is rolled over the sides, all 4 windows are rolled over the window framing and the top of the door rolls over the roof (there is no molding of any type). It is two steel frames welded together. You have the main frame which is 2" angle. Then you have the 'shape' framing which is 1" steel tubing. So with trying not to change anything outside, I'll be staying with just the one door. The tear is going to my sister when finished and she's not married at this time so only needs one door. When I build the Eggdrop, I'll build it with two doors.

Doug, good eye and the answer is yes, I'm going to drill most likely four 1/2" holes in that channel. I need to sand blast the whole lower frame, lots of rust.
