Gas Struts - how long?

Postby felixx » Mon Jan 19, 2015 3:41 pm

OK So I am slowly putting together some components for my TD
I was wondering how long are your Struts?
I was thinking of going to a wreckers yard and getting some out of the back of a van.

The ones I use are about 18" (.5m) ... but overall length might be determined by how much room you have between the rearward end of the countertop and the hatch hinge cross-beams (or any cabinetry that might be in the way), minus about 5" (hope that doesn't sound too confusing ... ;) ...). Good Luck, and ...

You have an excellent scource where you live.
In addition contact the learned gentleman at Strutpower, he supplied mine and is a wealth of knowledge and will help with the calculations so you get the right ones for the weight of the hatch. The ones out of a van might be too strong for your needs, or worse not enough & then not be able to be re-gassed or repaired. He even re-gassed mine a couple of years later when I increased the loading on the hatch. He was in Matipo St last time I visited, but I haven't been there since the earthquakes. . . . .
