Really cheap wood at HD

For those with a Home Despot nearby, and I don't know if my local store is weird or not, but they have an amazing "cull" rack that if you check often you can get some very, very good deals.

A few weeks back I picked up a bunch of 1x10x12' culls for about $5 each. They were beautiful and once I ripped them down to 3" width I ended up with enough to frame the walls. Also picked up 4 sheets of foamboard that had a 3" hole in them for about $3 each.

Today I go back and hit what I think is the mother lode. They had a bunch more of the 1x10's, but more than that they had 2 bundles of 12' tapered cedar siding - 8" wide(cost was $10 per bundle, 6 boards per bundle). They also had, for no apparent reason, four 2x6x12' absolutely beautiful rough cut, western red cedar boards for $4.50 each. Not sure why a rough cut, absolutely straight and dry cedar would be in the "cull" bin, but it was. Even the lumber guy didn't know why it was there, but said it had been there for a couple of days. They also had several sticks of nice clear poplar of various widths. Yeah, for $140 I picked up a truck load of pretty darn good lumber.

Time to get to resawing the rest of my strips. I think I might try to turn the siding into trim boards, since I have 144 linear feet of it now.

Thank you Home Despot, you keep making this build better and cheaper all the time.

:D

Sounds like an employee is loading the bin with stuff that they want to take, but you are beating them to it.   Inside job, don't-cha-know.

Suppose it might be returned goods that they don't restock for some weird reason?

Don't ask too many questions, they might figure it out!

KC, after seeing the cedar, that is kind of what I think too. That is why I went and got the lumber area guy to verify the price. With the siding there was 1 board that had maybe a 12" split at one end, but these were in a factory bundle, so it would have been very hard to have actually seen the split. The 2x6 rough are beautiful. The pine 1x10s are clear, straight with no cup or curve, just like before. Oh well, happy to help them get rid of their "junk". As long as it is stamped "cull" by their guys, then I'll gladly load it.

I, too, try to shop that way. Unfortunately, our local stores never put out any lumber that is usable, unless you need curved boards for boat. I have gotten good deals in the paint dept, It's not unusual to find exterior paints and stains for 75-80% off- looks like the mixed color wasn't quite what the customer wanted.
I find the local sub contractors building new homes often throw good materials into the dumpster- partial sheets of 3/4" foam board, furring strips, plywood cut offs - up to 50% of a full sheet, 2x4 cut offs - 4'-6' is common. That = lots of good stuff for a camper.
