Not to hijack this thread but, the other day I was watching "Queen Mary 2 Birth of a Legend" Apparently it was built in France. How come the French can build great Ships (QM2), Trains (TGV) and Planes (Airbus) but they can't make a decent automobile?

Heikki...here's an idea that I'm sure lots of people on this side of the Atlantic have done, in terms of skirting the "system"...build the tear with the axle where you want it, axle on top of the springs for instance, for the look you want...then swap it back into the "legal" position for liscensing purposes...get the tags...take it home and swap it back to where you want it...and don't anyone out there tell me that they would never think of doing something so devious  I've towed tons of trailers that aren't offically legal and have yet to be stopped for a trailer violation, most times it's because you're speeding or doing something else illegal, just make sure you have all your lights etc...and don't do anything that might attract attention from the local law... doug

Heikki, I really like the second pic...I don't remember, are you doing a woody?? r Aluminum sides...can you get 5' ply...can you get 5' AL...while you can live with 3 ft inside, will you be happy with it???...leaving the profile high and adding a skirting may be the way to go if your axle man doesn't have a solution...Doug's solution ain't a bad one either...I think we have talked about that before....

Yupper...French build ships true.. But in Finland we compete with them fiercely... Majority of your Luxury Liners both RCCL and Carnival and many.... more are made in Finland....

If the French would stop trying to make Cars and Parts out of French Bread Dough.. It would be a diffrent story....

Dear Madjack

I spoke with the Axle Folks and The Finnish Motor Vehicle Division..Just a lil while ago. I can put the US Made Torsion Axle on as long as its installed properly and the Company has a guarantee for its weight capacity or description. Yippee

So a torsion axle can be put on to your standards....

Ships: France doesn't build many ships, but specialises in a few 'high end' types such as cruise and container ships.

Trains: The important bit about the TGV isn't building it (it's not that clever) but the government decision to fund the building of the entirely new railroad tracks on which it runs - French government has a history of doing things like this which it thinks the whole country, rather than just commerce, needs.

Planes: The factory for assembling Airbuses is indeed in France but all the component parts come from other Yurpeen countries.

Cars: The French and most of the rest of Yurp rather like French cars, mostly the small ones where they lead the Yurpeen market. It is French engineers who have taught the rest of the world what a good diesel engine is (new cars in France are now 70% diesel). However the French small cars are not in the Japanese league for quality, though few Yurpeen cars are - but the French-built Toyota Yaris (=Echo) is.

    Heikki,
Good deal! :applause: The torsion axle will be much easier then building a sub-frame. Here is a picture that Rich (Nitetimes) supplied that would work well for properly installing the torsion axle. http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=8887 Keep in mind, if you center the axle under the cross rail, the wheel center line will be about 6" farther back. Heikki, Pendolinos (tilting trains that bank around corners) are indeed made in Italy, but the French TGVs are conventional, non-tilting trains.

Fred, Renault do build a nice Formula 1 racecar, but they build it in Britain - the engines are certainly designed in France, and may also be built there, but the chassis is certainly made in Britain.

On the quiet, most high level motor racing throughout the world is based at least in part in Britain - did you think Indy cars and Champ cars were actually made in America? I think only Nascar is the exception, being entirely a US operation.

Not for long! Toyota is gonna move in and steal the big 3's thunder. Rumor has it that Honda will also, but I've also heard that they aren't due to their IRL commitments. I can't wait.

Seems that Toyota had to develop a "low tech" engine so that they could race. Toyota wouldn't be caught dead with an iron block pushrod engine in one of their production cars.

IRL "Indy Car" uses spec Honda eninges. There are 2 chassis in use, the Dellarta (Italian) and Panoz (US). Don't know where they get their R&D but I bet the get a lot of info from F1.

 Ya really have to have a concept of how to drive to build a car. Ever been to France?

Amen to Finland's ship builders.

If Findland is as strict as Norway I would try to not by-pass the rules, but 3 feet is real close. How're ya gonna jump up and down?

:) And it takes a Spainard to drive it. Diverse world. Aye? 30 years ago I bought a new car from Eric Broadley. At the time, Britain built more race car chassis than any other country. But it took us 'Merkin's to make 'em go fast!
