It dries clear on the surface though?

Depends on how much you dilute the glue.... If you mix it "thick" than it might dry with a "skim milk" kinda look to it. But remember the thinner you make it the more you have to use to get the same amount of stick. The trick it to let it cure on a low humidity day. Should be able to dry in about 3 hours depending on humidity and temp, however overnight is usually best.
