VW Side Window Install Question

I have a chance to get a couple of nice old VW side windows and for free.

Does anyone have photos of an install onto a tear if I would get these?

VW windows use a rubber seal around the window that has a groove for the thin metal body flange to seat into. I don't know how you would mount these if you do not have this flange on a tear. It is part of the stamped body on the "v-dub". Maybe a custom seal?!

Thats what is on my mind as well. I saw this on the VW at our friends house. I then started thinking as to how this is to be installed onto the tear.

I stand corrected! I should have said "with the exception of hinged tilt-out models"!. These have the seals attached to the frame. Well done!

For the fixed windows, the VW rubber window strips would be no good because, as prohandyman said, the VW seals are designed to mount in thin sheetmetal body flanges.

However there are standard rubber seals designed to work in thicker body sections so you would need to buy some of that. Places to look would be companies that supply boatyards or classic car repairers.



For Heikki, here is an excellent rubber supplier in Britain that does seal that fits 6mm windows in 6mm body thickness - if you wanted to install this in thicker plywood, you could just use a router to thin the edge of the opening down to 6mm.

I realize that this is an OLD thread, but I had to comment on the VW windows. I built my first house from scratch, boards from the sawmill, paycheck to paycheck. I also built both of the doors. The kitchen door had two VW windows. It was SO cool.
I lived in the Missouri Ozarks and you could build anything you wanted. Here is a pic of the house before it was complete.
