1/8" LUAN" ???

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

1/8" LUAN" ???

Postby Bodyman » Wed Jul 26, 2006 6:20 pm

I have checked Menards. Lowes, Home Depot, and a small local lumber yard . Noone has 1/8" luan plywood. I wasn't too concerned on tear #1 because I stripped used wood paneling from an old mobile home but will soon be ready for roof on tear #2.
Where is everybody getting 1/8" luan????

The wholesalers have it, but they probably won't sell to you.

Find a small cabiet shop and see if they will get you some from thier supplier for a reasonable mark up, say 15%.

I would call some cabinet makers, also. I did that when I was looking for roof materials and found a few locals that could get it but would have to order it in. If you tell them what you are building you'll notice a ramp up in their voice pitch and will start asking you questions......... it's pretty cool.

Wow, that's strange. I guess it's all in where you live.. Here Lowe's and Home Depot both have it by the bundles it cost around $14. It is sometimes referred to as 5.2 mm Luan....Best of luck.

Randy
All of the places you checked should be able to order it for you. Ask the manager if you can't get it from the others. Our 5.2 luan is almost a 1/4".

You might try asking what they can get in 1/8" and see if you get a better response.

Ask if they can order it...or find another small lumberyard.

Save yourself a lot of aggravation, Randy:

www.boulterplywood.com

Give them a call, and buy their 1/8" bendy birch ply that they'll roll into a tube and ship to you.

It'll cost you a bit more, but you'll have a really nice birch surface to finish. (Totally useless of course if you plan to skin with aluminum.)

They're good guys to deal with, and Tom S and I both ordered from them. They shipped all the way from Massachusetts down to me in FL, and the shipping wasn't all that much.
Here we go again!

Thanks for all the feedback
Yes, they all have underlayment It is a shy 1/4". Would work for a 4' wide It bends lenghtwise but not the other way for a 5' wide without kerfing
I will keep on checking around
Ony other ideas welcome

Check the yellow pages and call lumber yards... many carry 1/8, but not usually lowes or h/d.

If they do not have it, I ask them if they know who might. Most are pretty good about recommending alternative places. I just keep calling till I find what I need.

I used the 1/8 luan doorskins and suggest using the short side for all bends. Even with the 1/8 I had flat spots and cracking using the long side, and that was with a 19" radius. I know that is about the size limit for bending, but just saying I would suggest the short side for bending unless you get the bendy plywood. I applaud the tears I have seen constructed with 1/8 and 1/4 bent on the long side. You people are woodworking gods!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

I used 1/8 the long way to conserve wood.... after one year, when I chopped the top and removed quite a bit of the 1/8, it still sprung back to almost straight... I thought it would have 'conformed', but it surely did not....

Next time, I go the short way...... a bit more scrap, but easier to handle the bending.
