Death of a Cubby

Postby Jimbo » Tue Aug 01, 2006 6:24 pm

Well... Everyone is all the time posting pics of thier teardrop builds. I decided to be different. I have pictures of my teardrop demolition. Now, before everyone starts sending me hate mail, it is for a greater good. The Cubby was too small and we have always liked the look of the original Trailer for Two. I still contend that the Cubby is the BEST teardrop for a newbie. I made a lot of mistakes that, I hope to avoid on the new build. It was a great learning experience.

The wife and I are planning a big month long trip out west to travel Route 66 for our 20th anniv here in two years. Since it is a trip to recapture the spirit of days past, we decided to demo the cubby and use it's frame for a Trailer for Two to take on the trip. We will be using the original 1947 plans with the obvious changes such as no asbestos and working in a Pet Cool AC.

For those that didn't know (I didn't until I started researching), over 85% of the Mother Road is still intact. There has been a huge conservation effort in recent years to save as much as possible for tourism use. Every once in a while, the Travel Chanel has info about it on. There is still quite a huge following of fans.

This past weekend, we took a short trip down US Route 60 just to see how it would be and we're sold. Lots of roadside stuff to see and it's kind of nice getting off the beaten path. After all, I feel that's what teardrops are all about.

Oh yea, they do come appart much easier and quicker than they go together. ;)

In any case, here's Cubby loaded and ready for the dump.

And here I thought you were going to reuse the frame for you next build... come to find out you have other plans for you frame.

So tell me what you have in mind for your next teardrop or tiny travel trailer?

:applause: A #66 trip would be a blast. When you come through here let us know and we can have a get together. Old hiway is not too far from here.

New trailer on the Cubby frame will be a "Trailer for Two".

I have to add, my problems with the Cubby were all "self induced". Biggest and questionably the most dangerous mistake that I made was with the doors. I let myself get talked into "Square doors" because it would be easier to trim. Once I got them trimed up, it sure was easy but I had created a lethal campgroud weapon for middle of the night falls. The aluminum angle met at a perfect point that would split you open if you fell on it. I was like running with scissors, not a good idea.

Of course, the plus side was that if a bear attacked, all I had to do was open the door real fast and it would have gutted it. ;) It also made cleaning fish super easy.

Needless to say, that was the final straw for me. When I do the trailer for two, I plan to use rounded doors.

Enjoy and, I'm back to join in on the fun. Looks like it's become a busy place.

Rounded doors sounds nice. Keep us in the loop as you build.

Yea, if you don't check the forum every day, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the number of messages... :o

No kidding! Last night was the first time I wasd able to check the board since we left the Petaluma KOA (6days). When I checked unread posts, there were 189 (4 pages worth.)

Jimbo,

Thanks for being so courageous, I bet lots of Cubby projects have ended up at the dump, you're the only one brave enough to tell about it.

As for the rationale; trailer for 2 doors are also square, but contain no aluminum trim left razor sharp to eviscerate the unwary. Looking forward to seeing your new build.
