Refinishing Hunter Teardrop Galley

Postby campadk » Sun Jul 30, 2006 12:53 pm

Anyone know what type of clear finish is is used on the Hunter teardrops to seal the birch woodwork in the galley and/or in the cabin?

Some type of urethane no doubt.. but what?? Water or oil based? I have some areas to redo that have been slightly damaged by water/weather.

Tnx!

Dave,

I believe I'd call the builder. I have no idea what they used. If I had built the trailer in question, I'd have used a polyurethane. Minwax makes a nice Wipe On Polyurethane which I often use on my furniture...........and will be using exclusively on the inside of my teardrop.
Chris :D

The tension between what is good enough and what is beyond that creates the space for character to become our work.

Hi Chris,

I did call Hunter but they seem to only want to 'talk' via email... I await their answer...

Maybe Boilogical Mike will know. I'll email him.

So Much for Service!

Postby campadk » Wed Aug 02, 2006 7:06 pm

Ah well.. no response from Hunter.. I'm sad to say it , but in our experience service has never been something they ever seem to be interested in so I'm not surprised (some might remember the hassle we went through just getting their assistance to help with the incorrect VIN number they had put on our HU-3). Took me 3 days at the inspection station to resolve that one, and Hunter didn't even want to fax a required form to us!

Their lack of interest in talking to anyone on the phone or providing any assistance is really disappointing. They make a great product, but to bad they don't take care of their customers. Heck I am sure we have help them indirectly with more than a few sales from all the intererest and emails we have received about our tear!

Anyways I decided to just use some varathane we had to fix up a few weathered areas in the galley and be done with it.

Off camping in the tear for a week on Friday! Weeeeeeee!

Hello Dave, sorry, been out camping so didn't see your post until now. I don't know what Hunter uses but I used HELMSMAN spar urethane by Minwax. It's indoor/outdoor. I used it on all my birch cabin and galley. I also used it on the exterior skin of my hatch and is holding up quite well. I haven't touched it for about two years now and looks as good now as when I applied it. About every 6 months I wipe the cabin down with some Old English (natural oil) furniture polish. That help any?

Have a good day.

Hope to make it to the East Coast and the Adirondacks following the ITG next year.

Would be great if you can make it to ADK land next year! Let me know approx dates. Heck I am booking up our summer 2007 already!

Dave, are you guys planning on Mystic next year? After the ITG, we want to go on over to the East Coast and plans are to try and make Mystic. I think Grant is planning on Mystic also. With ITG being in Neb, we're already half way there so why not. Besides Tanya and I have never been to that side. Would you believe I even want to drive down to that island with all those tall cement and steel buildings (but not with the teardrop) just to see how crazy it is or is the word fantastic. So it looks like we're talking July that we are going to be in that area. Haven't figured out yet exactly when in July.

Have a good day.

Dave, I see you have a Delta box. Do you have any contact problems when you jackknife your rig? Or are you real carefull?
