Cutting the metal roof trim

Postby cubflyer » Wed Aug 28, 2024 7:14 am

I'm almost done with my squaredrop build. I have my angle roof trim ready to install. Flat roof, angle front, then vertical front. How do you cut the corners where the sections meet ?
I've tried overlapping and scribing and cutting but the corners don't match up. This is like cutting trim moulding in your home...It's an art. Any pictures, or suggestions
of your insert trim install would help. Can't bugger this up. It would really stand out on an otherwise pretty nice build. Thanks.

You need to measure the angle, then use a chop saw to cut the trim. Each piece would have half the angle... So if it was 45 degrees, you'd cut a 22.5 degree angle on each end.

Reaver, thanks for the reply. I've got to figure out another way to cut this 1/2 angle. Don't have a chop saw and can't justify one for 4 corners.
Keep thinking....this can't be that hard. Thanks.

a picture of your attempts would give us something to comment on and recommend? How are you scribing the cut lines?

Use paper or cardboard and figure it out a scissors by trial and error. May take a few tries but you'll get it eventually.

If you have a harbor freight near you, go and pick up a cheap angle grinder. Then some decent cutoff discs. It'll make quick work, especially if you scribe the angle where you need to cut.

I used a reciprocating saw (saws-all) with a fine toothed metal blade in it. Pretty clean cut and required hardly any touchup of the edges.

Go look real close at some factory campers trim and maybe you'll feel better about your odds of getting a nice cut and remember the 10' rule.

If only cutting four corners, how about using a cheap hack saw and cutting by hand?

Cut miter joints and sneak up for a perfect fit. Use a standard miter saw and yes, with a wood blade will work. A metal blade like the new Diablo Steel Demon will cut it like butter. The trim is very soft aluminum. Just about anything will cut it.
