A little help with design

Postby Roy Dietsch » Tue Jan 16, 2007 9:17 pm

I just bought a shifter kart and need to get it around. Its about 53"'s wide and about 76 inches long. I was planning on buying a HF trailer because I don't have a mess of cash. Since the trailer is 4ft and I need 5 I am going to build wells into the body of the trailer and have 6" ramps on each side for the kart to roll on lined in red. Another problem is my tow vehicle is a 1982 VW rabbit with a solid 70 HP(I don't want to go too tall because of wind resistance). I put race brakes in it so stopping shouldent be an issue but the hitch I bought appears to mount to the bumper... uggg...and its reccommended that I don't go over 100lbs of tongue weight. Here is a pic of what I have to fit, does anyone have an idea on what I can do to help the situation? Also what do you use to cover your trailer and where can you get it?

Thanks,
Roy

Roy,

Do you want the trailer to be dual purpose (camping and hauling the cart)? If not, you could put the cart towards the rear, and the shelf with the 55# thing above it, and the fuel in front. That would get some weight off of the tongue.

There are some reasonably priced 5' wide trailers out there, which would allow you to put the cart between the wheel wells, and keep the center of gravity down lower.

Is this a drop in replacement for the HF axle?

Roy...I'm no engineer, but based on what you are showing...you are going to exceed your 100# tongue load, by a bunch...might be an idea to PM Andrew on this one...and I'm assuming that you are talking about the bumper hitch capacity...what about the vehicle, what is it's towing limits? ....just my thoughts...Doug

Hi Roy!

I'm sure you've considered the red trailer 5' wide models. They are not that much more expensive, considering the hassle you will have to go through modifying an HF one.

Just sticking my 2 cents in and welcome!
