Trailer Width...

What is the widest a trailer should be? What are the DOT limits, and what do you guys suggest?
Would a good rule of thumb be 'not wider than the car'?

Anything over 8' is considered a "wide load" and requires special licensing and marking. In some states the rules are different for trailers wider than 7-1/2', so I wouldn't consider anything that wide.

Personally, I think that anything over 6' is getting beyond the "teardrop/small trailer" range. On the other hand, less than 4' and it's really too small for two people. 4'-5' or so is the "normal" range for a typical teardrop trailer, but just how wide you make it is entirely up to you.

Sounds good. That is good info to have. I was thinking 6' wide for mine as my wife and I combined make kind of a wide load
I have been looking through some early camper plans I have and see that a couple of the pop-up campers have kind of a pull-out bunk. Something like that might work. Or some kind of slide out.

My max is 6 feet. The longest I would go is 12 feet.
