Help MadJack Or Other Teardrop Gurus..Got An Adhesive ?

Hopefully MadJack or one of you other Teardrop Gurus can answer my question. I am in the middle of gluing up the roof spars today and found that the Liquid Nails Extreme Duty Adhesive did not hold the spar I set up yesterday too well. I went back to countersink some of the screws and when I pulled the screw out of the spar, It fell away with no resistance. I put a healthy amount on the end of the spar where it meets the wall. The tube has been opened for a little over a week with a cap on it...maybe it has lost it's strength?????

So, my question is: If you had your choice of adhesives to glue up your spars between Gorilla Glue, Titebond III, or Liquid Nails, Which would you trust the most??? Need help with this quick so I can get gluing up the rest of my spars. Thanks for any help.

If you are gluing end-grain to side grain, I would use Gorilla glue, titebond does not hold verywell by itself.

You need to use screws anyways to help with support. after the glue has dried.

...the only construction adhesive I would use is PL brand(minimal clamping)...just make sure it is a urethane based product...TBIII is an excellent all round adhesive(requires extensive clamping and 24hour setup) and Gorilla Glue(needs some clamping and a couple of hour setup) will work as well(read directions..carefully)...the PLbrand(urethane based) is the only one that will fill small gaps...if you have many of those, ya got other problems...all that being said, we used GG.........

Thanks for the fast reply, Madjack and rbeemer. Home Depot sells PL all over the store. I don't have any on hand but I have Gorilla glue. So the Gorilla Glue is your weapon of choice when you build professionally?

I don't have clamps wide enough to push in on the walls since it's 76" wide. If I drive my exterior screws nice and tight, should that be enough???? My walls are square as can be without the spars in place. I am starting to stress again....

Madjack, Can I bring it to you to finish before I go nuts Just kidding of coarse. As long as I have you guys giving me advice, I know I can do this!!!

...screws...with da glue should be just fine...one reason we use GG is that we prefinish/seal everythign before assembly and GG will hold on to the finished pieces quite well...remember that GG is moisture activated...apply the GG on one side and lightly dampen the other side...a cleanup tip for GG...GG foams as it sets, if you keep a rag wet with mineral spirits(or solvent of choice) handy, about 15mins(orso) after the clamp up, you will see a foam line appear...use your solvent rag to wipe it off...much easier than trying to scrape/sand it off later...also buy the smaller bottle(no quarts) of GG as it has a definite shelf life and READ the directions........

Thanks MadJack...I couldn't do this without your guidence. I owe you many beers. I will do as instructed. Apply GG to end of spare, wipe the wall with wet sponge and then sit back with rag of mineral spirits and wait for squeeze-out and wipe it off before it dries. GG is a lot easier to clean up than Liquid Nails. I got that crap all over me and the garage floor. it took hours to clean up the mess.

Leave the screws in this time, besides clamping pressure they will add support to the glue joint

GG is a lot easier to clean up than Liquid Nails. I got that crap all over me and the garage floor. it took hours to clean up the mess.

Oh dude, you have no idea. I am 40 years old and my wife insists that I am regressing back to being a baby with each passing year. I refuse to grow up and insist on laughing daily at my house. Been a goof-off and class clown my whole life. It does help keep your sanity when building a coffin......I mean er ah...TEARDROP, yeah, Teardrop that's what it is.
