Another Generic Benroy - SaGR's build

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby SaGR » Fri Jul 27, 2007 3:17 pm

The only self tapping screws I found for wood to metal (machine thread) are zinc, none in stainless. I'm thinking these should be OK since we're doing a woodie and they'll be encapsulated in epoxy. (?)

Also - how far apart should the self tappers be spaced? I'm thinking maybe 6 evenly spaced down the side should be more than enough. MJ?

I think that depends entirely on the size and quality of the screw. I am sure of one thing--- it won't come up. You might put an outside one every 12 inches and the inside the same but offset from the outside screws.

Gallery updated (WWW link below).

We wound up having to go with 3/4" outside ply  . None of the local stores had squat on hand that was worth using! It was all warped, broken edges or had plugs everywhere.

Plus side - check out the grain in the pieces we did get. She's gonna be a woodie (woody?), no doubt about that now!

We've finished the walls (furred (sp?) and insulated).

Hopefully this weekend we'll get them actually mounted on the trailer!

Walls on and two temporary spars in place!!! FINALLY!!!!

Wednesday we'll pull them off, add supports for some shelves above our heads in the corners and cut out the doors. Then we'll mount them permanently on the trailer and get rolling on the spars.

We actually wound up with 59 1/4" width inside! So we've got an extra bit of room to play with and after having laid down in it yesterday I'm going to be glad. Felt a bit confined and that's without a roof on it yet.

Pics up in the WWW link in a few.

Funny thing - the garage was the exact width we needed and it allowed us to use the bar clamps as temporary supports at the top and 3 straps around the bottom to hold the walls rigidly in place and plumb.

Moving right along! Must be that good looking helper?
Think you will have it done by the gathering?

Well being done by then is an iffy thing. Between the wedding and some oral surgeries coming up, we may run out of funds to finish it in time for the gathering.

We'll be there either way that's for sure!

OK, so hopefully our Labor day will include some labor!

I want to get the doors cut and all the spar pockets routed in today. Then this week we can start on the cabinets and get her all tied together.
