Postby Boodro » Fri Mar 18, 2005 2:42 am

Hi , I know there has been disscussion on toungu weight here before , but I can't locate it( Ihaved the flu since Friday nite) :( So I may have missed it in bleary eyed state :( I need some input on this though. My TD is 4x4x12' it sits on a refurbed popup frame. I have pics in my album, I have not weighed the trailer as of yet but I did weigh my toungu & it was 146 pounds ( the tear is not loaded with anything yet.) . Does this seem in excess? anny input is welcome. Thanks for all the help here.( I just read what I typed & I see I can't spell! Sniffle sniffle- achoo! I think I'll have a shot of Drambuyie then go to bed. sheesh!

Boodro,

What I have read says the tongue weight should be a function of total trailer weight, about 10 to 15%. Don't think size of the trailer is really relevant. Hope you get over that case of the flu soon.

Hitch Capacity

Postby Dee Bee » Fri Mar 18, 2005 6:46 am

Also check the vehicle rating for its hitch capacity. The tongue weight shouldn't exceed the weight the tow vehicle is designed to carry on the hitch or it will affect safety and steering

This is a great example of overloaded hitich. You gotta see this clip

One basic formula is 10% of trailer weight up to a max of 300 pounds.... This is for our type of trailer, not some 32" job......

Boodro,

Using the generally-recommended 10-14% hitch weight range, your 146lb is just right for a trailer in the 1000-1500lb total weight range.

However when you add some weight to your galley, the hitch weight will go down - so you might need to pack some weight inside the cabin to keep the balance you've got now.

Hey all, Thanks for the responses! :D When the weather settles down here some I plan on weighing my TD at the local grain elev. Then I'll find out how close I am to that 10-15 % range. I think my 2000 Explorer can handle it.As you can tell I am spelling much better today. I had a good nites rest , & feeling a whole lot more human ! Thanks again for the responses! Spring is any day now!!!

Hey Dee Bee , I liked that video!!
