Hatch help...Building hatch in place

Postby Juneaudave » Sun Feb 10, 2008 5:32 pm

I've turned my attention to building my hatch, and want to do it in place. The spars and pieces are cut, ready for final fit and trimming. For what ever reason, I seem to remember that the space between the hatch and the header should be 1/4 inch to accomodate one of Grant's hinges. But as I look at the hinge...1/4 inch seems a little big. Do I need to figure in a gasket space? What am I missing?

Dave
When the hinge/hatch is closed, there is a gap of approx. 1/4" between the verticle dividers. Hence the reason for allowing space in the top most hatch spar. I will see if I can find a pic.
oops...I'm too late...nice pic Mike.

Mike,
Thanks for the pic. I'm about at the same place in my build, so this was helpful. Good detail pics are always useful.

Dave, it leaves about a 1/4" between the leaves when the hatch is shut...for additional sealing, I placed a piece of 1x3/16x2 foam weatherstrip on each side of the hinge...also be sure and leave at least a 1/2" of overhang on both sides as a diverter and for room to put a set screw on both sides to keep the hatch centered in place....
