48 Kit restoration/repair project

Postby dguff » Wed Mar 26, 2008 1:27 pm

I have made some progress on the 48 Kit and also have been thinking about a new direction.

After partially deconstructing the Kit I have found it to be sound enough to repair rather than fully restore. The axle is not frozen, I have repacked the wheel bearings and installed new studs in the hubs. The coupler has been repaired. New tires have been ordered. The fenders will be repaired. I need to repair the galley lid.

I will rebuild the galley using some old pieces. The ice box has been insulated. All new spars are cut to length. I will put on a roof of 1/8" ply as a base for new aluminum but not replace the aluminum roof yet. The interior will be cleaned and maybe painted. I will clean and prime the exterior. Then I will put it up for sale. Basically the trailer will still be a project for someone to finish and at some time in the future fully restore. My goal is to make it structurally sound so that it can be towed. I am not going to install running lights yet but someone could tow it with a temporary trailer light kit.

Jerome :)

Keep us updated on it!

I really want one of those Kit teardrops, but all the ones I find are on the west coast or way out of my price range.

Well, it will be road worthy but still will need total restoration at some time.
It did not look too good at the start!
