Transporting my aluminum skins

Postby berry » Mon Jun 09, 2008 4:09 pm

Hi Everyone...

I found a supplier for my Al skins, (Loxscreen in West Columbia, SC, ~$70/sheet for 4X10X.040 5052,) but the lady on the phone said the warehouse guys told her they couldn't be rolled up for transport. Is this hooey? Are they just being careful?

I know I read in Kevin's cubby build manual that his were delivered rolled up - does anyone have experience with this? My Highlander won't carry them unrolled...

Thanks...

I ended up renting a U-haul for the sheet goods, used my pick em up truck for the rollde stuff.

Those are probably sheet goods so they come flat. You'll probably want to keep them flat if you plan on using them for your sides.

I don't think I'd want to transport the coiled roll in our Highlander, the sharp edges would tear it up.

my .032 could be rolled up in about a 2' diameter. However, my supplier told me they wouldn't roll .040 - looks like we had the same dilemma

Or, god forbid, they came undone in the car.

My last aluminum supplier wouldn't roll up my .050 & .032 sheets but provided two 2x4 x 4' boards. I didn't spring for a $60 pallett. I used vinyl wrap to hold everything together for the 45 mile trip. The sheets were 12' long hanging out the rear of my full sized pick up with the tail gate down. The air pressure bowed up the sheets and scratched through the vinyl covering in places. I was able to cut out the scratched areas. If I ever do it again I'll make my own 12' pallett from a couple of 2x's some OSB and sandwich it together with some more OSB or plywood/particleboard. Then wrap the whole thing with vinyl wrap. :D Danny
