FRP... again!!!!

... I know its been whipped to death ...FRP.... but I was just wondering how it has held up for you people who have used it ... I live in eastern Canada ... It dosent get too hot here during the summer ... 30 deg c ... a few prople have talked about "oil caning" ..has this been a problem for every one ??.. I dont have a garage to store my tear in but I tarp the roof when Im not using it ... It does get to -25 deg C in the winter ... does any one have any bad experences with FRP in the cold ???? I do have to seam the roof ... mine is 5' wide .. with the enviroment Ive described can any one see any problems ????

Hi 05 Just to let everyone else know. My TD has FRP from Lowes.( 28.00 a sheet) It has been almost 4 years now & no problems with the FRP. I did remove the sides to make it a woody( prettier) but the top is still FRP. It is still white no chalking , no brittleness , it still shines after a wash.( even after sitting under a cherry tree!!!) Would I recommend it ,, yes if you like the WHITE. Since I built it it has sat outside 80% of the time with no effects. Good luck.

I have to agree, I do have some expansion problems on the hatch, but it settles down in the cold. It has been a couple of years since I installed it and it seems to get better every year. It does not leak and sets in the car port when not in use. I would say go for it, the price is right, and it will keep you dry. I think in time it will cure and the expansion problem will solve itself. It gets a bit chilly up here in the mountains in the winter, and I have found no problems at all. Jim G

I have had my TD finished for 16 months. No real problems. I do have a very small spot on the passenger side wall that creates a very small bubble in 95 to 100 degree heat. Always pops down as soon as it gets below 85 degrees.
My TD is 5 X 10. I found at a salvage yard rolls of FRP from a shower enclosure manufacturer that had gone out of business. The rolls were 6' 8" wide which allowed me to have no seams on the roof. I got enough to do the outside walls, the roof, the inside walls, and the floor for 110.00 total. Too good a deal to pass up.
Cutting the stuff was a chore until I got an electric shear which cut it like butter.
My wife did not care for the white exterior color. Krylon makes a paint for plastic called "Fusion". Wife did not care for the available Fusion colors. I used one of the green Fusion colors as a base coat. The Sherwin Williams paint store said any good outdoor latex would stick to the Fusion paint and also provide excellent UV protection. So far so good. We have camped in as low as 25 degree temps and no problems as of yet.
