I am getting a lot closer to varnish than I ever wanted to be. Frankly, I don't like it. It takes way too long to dry and it's real sticky. Aside from that I guess it's OK. It does a better job of pretecting the wood than lacquer, which I passionately prefer. I am using varnish on the interior and for sealing insides of wall panels, etc, but prefer to shoot the exterior with something less yellow. One recommendation -- use good stuff. Expect to pay close to $100 per gallon. Minwax Helmsman is cr@p, but you can get it at the big box and I thought it would be good enough for the interior. Sure wish I had gotten the good stuff. I can tell already I will be doing it over in a year or two.

In anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away.
