I agree. As it is, the struts are mainly lifting the hinge (as you saw) instead of mainly lifting the hatch. Seriously consider moving the top mounting points closer to the middle or bottom end of the hatch sides, repositioning the bottom mounting points if needed. You may even find you don't such stout strts, as the leverage will be so much better.

Exactly – what is happening is that because the attachment load is close to the hinge, the load is also higher. The load decreases until you get all the way to the bottom of the hatch. Of course, at that point, it will no longer open it enough; so, you have to strike a balance and get it as far to the bottom as possible and still have it open enough. After the attach point is about half way to the bottom of the hatch the reaction at the hinge should drop near zero, and the hatch is now balanced at the attach point. If that doesn’t open enough, you could cheat to back toward the hinge, but… you could end up back where you started.

This is actually why a stick with a fitting on wither end isn’t such a bad idea, even though it seems low-tech.

I did a lot of reading on this site before I installed my struts. While different people try different things, I found that the way I posted earier seemed to be the best. I installed my struts on Friday and went camping on Saturday. They worked great. My hatch weighs about 84 pounds and I used 2 150# struts from McMaster-Carr. They start lifting on their own about 1/3 of the way up and gently raise the hatch to the full open postion without any help. They hold it open perfectly. I'm very happy with the positioning and the results.

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

Wow! 150# that's going big, for me to change the geometry of the struts I have to exchange my current ones for new ones, my current ones aren't long enough. Currently I have to sticks holding up the galley door and that will have to do until I get back from my 12 day camping trip.

Thanks,

Mark,
your pic didn't show up right away for some reason. Note that mark's attachment to the hatch is out a ways (I don't know if it is quite 1/2 way or not), but this is what I was talking about -- maybe Mark could give you some rough dimensions that he used and you could do a little scaling for yours. If his attachment to the hatch was close to the hinge it would be putting a much bigger load on the strut AND on the hinge. AS is, it looks pretty good (and works too!) :applause:
