METAL size for trailer

I am building a 5'x 8' teardrop trailer. I haven't been able to find a suitable trailer to build on so i have decided to have one made. My question is: I want to stay light, what is the best size tubing and tow bar to uses to have one welded. I was thinking of 2" x 2" for the trailer, with 1" x 2" cross members and 2" x 3" for the two bar. Thanks in advance. .

I am using 2 x2 x 1/8 angle for the sides, front and back on a 5 x 9 benroy. I am suing a 2 x 2 square tube A frame for the tongue. I am using an axle and spring combination rather than a torsion axle, because of cost.

Andrew has some tongue strength information on the tongue strength section in the design library.

Carter (Jim) has a great picture of a frame and floor design that would be light weight, in my introduction post, entitled "its about time"

I hope this all helps. There is such a wealth of information here.

Just to let you know, the steel, axle, and springs set me back $360 tax in. (total retail costs, without shopping around) I have yet to buy the tires, rims, wiring, chain, and hitch.

I posted this a few years ago... I figured it's time to post it again... realizing of course, prices have changed!!!

If you take this to your welder, he can do you up a nice 5x8 trailer. If you want to change the size, just tell the welder to space the center beams equally over the entire length.









This would probably be a good time to mention that if you want a dropped floor in your trailer, you might want to consider other options. If you look at my dropped floor, I had to cut a 45* chamfer to clear the tongue rails...
