I've always thought a bread truck type would make a good motor home (should I ever want one) and they come in all sizes and powertrains. Most are "stoopies" but some are "standies." Watch for the taller "forehead" above the windshield. More are showing up used as people buy the Mercedes / Dodge bus / van. Of course the bread truck type can also be bought new, also specified to your taste, for less than the other. See the cargo conversion forum for how to convert it.

hey all,
I use to go to a website that had "truck Houses". I think I goggled that and found the site that way[?]. Had some amazing creations there. Had many examples too. Most where built on old fire engines chassis.

Hey,
the name of the trailer your thinking of is the "Cabin Car". Rob48[?] from In./Ill.[?] has one. Barry on the tearjerker's site has built a copy of Rob's and has a build thread either here or on the other site. Big, Heavy, and KEWL!!!

About three years ago I considered purchasing an ambulance to convert into a motorhome. I just didn't have the resources. But they are not that hard to find, very robust, and are usually very well kept considering how many miles they have when you find them.

House Trucks

Postby Wild Bill » Wed Oct 21, 2009 8:53 pm

If you are thinking of building a motor home go to a site called house trucks. I considered converting a school bus, they come in a lot of differnet sizes and are well maintained and the larger ones have a lot of space to live in. Google bus conversions and you will find bus nuts etc. they are expensive to maintain and a breakdown could be very expensive. After doing a lot of research I would not consider it unless I could afford 5mpg and a much newer unit with low miles. Most retired busses have well over 100k on them. A small church type bus with your tear for a bedroom might be ok. Living room in the bus. Check on flex hitches if you ever tow with a bus. With the economy, there are a lot of new cab and chassis units sitting around on lots. Many are cheaper than a 3/4 ton Pickup truck. A 1 ton dually should get you what you need. Good luck with what ever you decide to build. Bill
