INSURANCE

Postby Southern1212 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 7:09 am

Just wondering how to go about getting a Home-Made, or should it be called *custom-made* , TearDrop insured?? I called my insurance agent, and was told they had never been asked about insuring such a camper (not surprising). But as this is an independent agency, they did some calling around and have not been able to find a company that will insurance it.

Perhaps what we are calling it needs to be worded different . . . Can some folks please tell me what it was called for you to get insurance?? And if anyone used an independent agent, what company did they get to write it??

I'm beginning to wonder if we're ever going to find a company. :(

Hi,

I have mine insured as a homebuilt, or home made camping trailer.

The insurance company wanted an appraisal, with pictures.
I got the appraisal from a vintage trailer sales company, and took plenty of pictures.

I have an "agreed value" policy, that is, we both have, up front, because of the appraisal value, agreed that that is the maximum amount they will pay if the trailer is totaled.

I'd guess you'll have a hard time getting any other sort of policy for a homebuilt.
While I've heard some others have gotten their agent to sell them insurance for a homebuilt, I would question how much good it really is?

If there is no established value up front, that you both agree on, if the trailer is damaged or destroyed, the insurance adjuster will be the one to decide what it is worth.
It is their job to pay out as little as possible...

Since it is a one of a kind, and there is no "book" value, you might be very dissapointed...

An appraisal should cost between $75-$200

It took me about 5 minutes to get a quote for the gypsy trailer from Progressive, and I don't have any other insurance with them. That doesn't mean that just because they gave me a quote for $188 a year they would actually write a policy though.

I called my agent and they added my teardrop to my car and umbrella policies. It was easy to do and all they asked for was the VIN and how much I wanted to insure it for. My home, auto and umbrella policies are all through Fidelity Insurance. Rates are very reasonable.

Yeah...GMAC gave me a quote, wrote a policy and took my money but then when it was "referred upstairs" they cancelled the policy
