hinges and aluminum skin

Postby Aint2Proud » Sun Jan 17, 2010 1:12 pm

I want to make my doors flush to the sides. How do you trim the door frame and door to hold the aluminum skin on and fit a piano hinge? Is the hinge just on top of the trim or do you just trim up to the hinge? If that is the case what holds the aluminum in front of the hinge and on the door? The other option would be to do hinges like Thomas did, which I am really thinking hard about - those look sharp.

Thanks.

I used a piano hinge and my doors are flush like yours. I skinned the door like normal and even put on the edging. (Aluminum angle)

There was a "low spot" between the two pieces af edging, so I put a flat piece of aluminum in. This made the surface that the piano hinge mounts to flat. I used plenty of silicone while doing this!

Kevin,

Thanks for the reply. By "low spot" do you mean the angle stopped at each end of hinge? The flat piece that you added, was it under the hinge or in front of it covering the aluminum? I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how you make the piano hinge flush against the wood of the door frame and still have molding over the aluminum of the body in front of the hinge - picture the doors on the Lil Diner. That is what I am trying to do. I apologize I am not explaining it very clearly. Another way to say it is how do you trim the aluminum of the body where it meets the knuckle of the piano hinge at the door frame? Thanks.
