Common beds for 4x8 trailer?

Postby claw73 » Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:14 am

I'm starting to look at buying some of the final touches so they will be here for July 4th. One big deal (at least to the girlfriend) is what we will be sleeping on. I know some people extend the common 4x8' Harbor Freight trailer to carry a full, but what do other people do?

My sleeping area is approximately 46" wide by 74" long. A twin will be close, a bit long, but also narrow. Any other suggestions?

Air mattress? Foam? She think an air mattress will be better but I honestly don't know which would be preferred. Do air mattresses have a decent bit of conformity? If I put a twin in would it shrink up and be fine? Would a full be pushing it to fill in the 6 or 8" gap in width?

Thanks for any help!!

You might consider the cheap 3" foam and a nice futon.

I didn't like just the foam as I am an actrobatic sleeper and it was hard to turn , it just seemed to swallow me up. I added a futon on top and it slept wonderful Saturday night while I was driveway camping in the rain.

Found the foam on freecycle and the futon was in the trash headed to the landfill.

I simply shampooed it and sanatized it and let it air dry in the sunshine and it was as good as new.

The king of cheap

Any foam mattress can be cut to fit! We found the Walmart mattress topper to be very comfortable. You can get a full size 4" to 5" and use an electric knife to cut to fit.

Go to walmart .com and search 'spa mattress' look up the size you want. You can cut one down to size with an electric knife. These mattresses are part miracle foam part reglular foam. We've got the 8" one and it sleeps great. I think we could have gotten away with the 6" one though.
Conform and be dull.

...what others have said...we bought a queen sized(60") foam mattress and cut it down(using an electric knife) to fit our 58" interior width...the mattress was 4" heavy duty furniture foam and a bit hard so we added a 2" memfoam topper from WalMart...PERFECT...it sleeps so well we are thinking about dong something similar at home...an air mattress should only be considered as a temp solution...however, one with a memfoam topper may work for you just remember with an air mattress, every move your partner make is transmitted directly to you...........................

Thanks everyone. I'm not too worried about being disturbed by her when we sleep, since she's about 110 and I'm pushing 250...I usually worry more about me turning and shooting her off the bed!

It sounds like the walmart mattresses and toppers are a great solution. Thanks everybody!!
