AC vent sizes

Postby dh » Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:13 pm

I want to vent my AC in through the side of the gally and run the exhaust down through the floor. How big do the vents need to be???

I'd make them the same size as the vents on the side of the unit.

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

2 six inch holes on mine and a normal floor vent on the other side in the galley....Works good.. I used marine louvered vents and epoxied the daylights out of the edges and insides of that side of the box. Just in case any water dared to get in... Also have some small white sticky tube insulation around the vents.

They are separated with a piece of wood and one is intake and one exhaust..

I have bubble foil insulation all over to keep the heat from warping the wood too...

Hm, two replies, both on opposite sides

I don't have a picture of the vent on the other side but it is the same size as the unit vent. Do what works! ;)

My AC is not permanently mounted (so I can leave it home) and the goes into and the goes out of the cooling end of the AC are 4" ducts going through the side of the trailer using 4" marine deck plates. My understanding is that you can reduce the air flow at that end but you want to have the condenser as free as possible. Your idea of having the condenser air flow ducted through the floor has merit. Bigger is better.

I have a 3-1/2 x 12" vent, fed by a 3-1/2 inch x 12 inch wall vent pipe, which is tilted up so any water that blows in will flow back out again.

I had a filter to keep bugs and bees out, but it restricted airfow too much and the A/C unit shut off. I'll either put a screen behind it like Miriam, or make a cover for whne it is not in use, which is almost always.

I'm not completely clear on the question, but my AC is inside the galley. In the picture below, the tall vent is the intake, and the smaller, rounder vent is the exhaust. I built a box on the back of the condenser that vents through the exhaust vent. There is a 4-inch hole behind the exhaust vent cover. The hole behind the intake vent cover is the size of the vent cover -- about 3-inches by 12-inches. The AC unit's fan does all the work of moving the air.

Back when I did mine the advise was to measure/calculate the area of the factory venting and provide at lest that much area when venting the enclosure. I do not know if it is necessary to do so. I do know that it works as that is what I did and my ac unit works very well.
