Window gasket question

Postby Hikerjohnd » Sun Oct 10, 2010 7:50 am

I just received a window from eBay. It has an attached rubber gasket where most folks would use butyl tape or silicone.

I am planning to use this as a sunroof and am very paranoid about leaks. Since this is a used window and I can't be 100% sure about the quality of the rubber, should I remove the rubber & seal with tape or silicone? Leave the rubber and use tape/silicone too?

Thanks for the help!

John, I think I would inspect the gasket closely and if it appears to be in good shape I would use it as is...I would however add a bead of sealant around the edge once installed just to be sure............

An Auto glass place may be able to get you a new one...if needed... Seal those wood edges real well before installing and if you do have a leak it won't do a lot of damage.. ;)
