Thin plywood

Postby Hillmann » Thu Oct 14, 2010 4:04 pm

I am looking for plywood that is thinner than 1/8 yet thicker than veneer. Can anyone help me out with a supplier, all I need is one or two sheets.

What is sold as 1/8" is often a metric measured plywood that is actually less than 1/8". Check out the specific things your local lumberyards carry.

Right now I am using 1/8 in birch(measures a little less than that) and when I cut it with a laser I either need to run two passes or slow it way down which causes tar build up on the lens. So I am looking for something along the lines of 3/32 or 5/64 so I can do it in one pass.

how big or a part are you making? The only plywood that you might be able to get is usualy small 3"x 1or 2 feet from hobby stores.

I've seen basswood plywood in 1/16", aircraft birch plywood is available in 1/16 but normally not 4x8 sheets. Bending ply is available in 3mm.

I would like them to be 18"x 32" so I can make parts as big as the laser is able to handle. For the time being I am just messing around an making toys for my kids but am hoping to after Christmas start making models to sell.

You can get high quality plywood down to 1/64th of an inch in up to 4'x8' sheets if you look hard enough. Stuff like 1/64th, 1/32th, 1/16th etc...

It's the same stuff you see in hobby shops before it was cut.

Make sure it's labeled as aircraft ply or tells how many plys it has. Avoid stuff labeled "lite-ply" as it's just two junk face plys with an even junkier inside core with lots of voids.

Either BalsaUSA or LoneStar Balsa can special order it for you in oversize sheets but they'll stock up to 12"x48".

Unfortunately everything that has been linked to is fairly expensive compared to$10.00 a sheet for 1/8 in luan.
