5x10 Cantalever

I want to build 5x10, but the bolt together trailers are only 8 ft long. Has anyone sourced a 5x trailer that is 10 ft long, or attempted to cantilever a foot or so off if the front and back of a standard frame?

I know I can get a custom frame welded, but am trying to use off the shelf components.

The shape we are building is very close to the raindrop ultra, so I suspect that fore and aft will be quite strong.

Hi Gerry, check out this thread for lengthening your HF frame. The pic that shows a frame extended by using a couple of the side rails that come with the kit looks like a great approach to me.

build a decent box and you woun't have to worry about it.

Use 3/4" birch ply for your floor and you'll have no problem. You can always reinforce the periphery with 2x2 framing.

I have a 5x10 on a 5x8 trailer. I put down a rather heavy bottom sill for the sidewall and once screwed or nailed into the sidewall there is no way it can flex. It most lokely will not see or be asked to support the standing weight of a person and therefore require no frame support.

In my picture you can see the ground thru my 2 foot cantaliever.



Turned out to be a fun build and a real practical little camper.

I only have one afternoon a week free thanks to school (had it with a corporate gig....I'm gettin a barbers license) and a full time job...this might not be attainable....but we hope for the best...

I got the barn build campable in 5 WEEKS working 10 hour days m-f. at my full time job.
Look at the time stamps on the thread started 6/6/09 and went camping with the group on 7/11/09.

So it is do-able. Here is the build thread.
