on a door how much bigger should the opening be bigger than the door with the standard molding ?

1/4" all the way around is pretty common...

that's what I used anyways...

If you are going to use a piano-type hinge and intend on "burying" it (mounting the "leaves" between the door and wall end), allow an extra 1/8" or so on the hinge side ... otherwise, yeah, 1/4" all around.

I came to that same conclusion about that extra 1/8" on the hinge side.

I've always done the scroll/jig saw technique, using a fence to make sure the straight lines are just that. Thing is....you can always sand/trim it down to fit....much tougher to build it up if it's too much.

The offset bent hinges that Grant sells are great....if you have any cup in a door (for straight ply users), they will help pull it out and provide a lot of stiffness and support. Just my experience with it. Doug
