Gluing outer ply to the spars

Postby LDK » Tue Jul 12, 2011 7:16 am

What would be a good adhesive to glue the outer ply to the spars. I used cpes on the spars and I was planning on using gorilla glue but thought I'd ask first. Also is there a trick to keep from making a big mess with the glue?

I think I would use a bead of a quality construction adhesive such as PL Premium...should be available at most all box and hardware stores...won't foam like GG and is designed to fill any voids you may have between the spars and ply...........

Larry,

+2 on what MJ said.

The PL Premium is pretty thick. One of the plastic notched trowels does a good job of distributing the adhesive over a large area.

Take care,

Don't get the PL blues. If you have a lot to apply before fitting the pieces together, it may skin over on ya. Make sure you 'pop' the skin when you put the roof on or it may not take, then you have to scrape it off the spars and start over.

Thanks for the advice guys. I went to Lowes and bought some loctite pl premium construction adhesive. First I'll mark all the spar locations on the ply skin , then I'll use rachet straps and strap it down for a few days in hopes of it retaining some memory and then I'll glue it and screw it down. Hopefully I won't have any problems. :worship:

Did you notice the battery powered caulk gun? I bought it for $10 on closeout sale at the BORG. (It was the tool only, but used the same battery and charger as my cheapo Ryobi cordless drill.) My arthritic wrists and hands appreciated the caulk gun. Best $10 tool purchase I've made.
