Installing Piano Hinge On Door Question

Postby VermonTear » Thu Feb 23, 2012 12:05 pm

Quick Question... I'm installing a 2" piano hinge on my 1.25 " thick Teardrop (wall also 1.25") and am not clear on how deep to set the hinge. I know (assume) part of the hinge has to extend out the exterior of the Tear. I've set up a test rig using scrap and at first set the hinge 13/16ths deep. That looked like it stuck out too far. Then I tried setting it 7/8ths. That's pictured below. 88047Is there a rule or do I just keep using trial and error and my gut?
Also, each side of the blade is 1/16th thick. Is that all that I should route out? That's all I routed out in this scrap test. 88046But... the whole hinge is 1/4" thick when both sides are parallel -- so should I really route out 1/8th on the door and the wall so that there is no gap between?

Okay... I think I just got my question answered by the piano hinge manufacturer.

Depth to set the hinge:It's personal preference up to a point. That point is the center of the pin in the piano hinge. If that point is set too far in, the door will bind when opened wide. To play it safe, I'll set the center of the pin a little outside the tear exterior wall. Depth to route out between the door and the wall: The hinge I have is 1/4" thick when the two sides are parallel. So if I want the mimimum amount of space between the door and the wall, I route out 1/8 each side for the hinge (or 1/4 on one side or the other.

That's the scoop from the manufacturer. Hope it helps somebody besides me. It's the stupid question I'll forget to ask that will no doubt trip me up.

Hey VermonTear,
Regarding adding pics, I recently gave a long detailed diatribe on how to post pics in Ruby Reds builld thread, third post down here:
http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=49088

Since then I have also read that big Mike has got the "album" button working so that you can also just put the pic # from your gallery in between the [album] book ends, instead of using the longer url an [img] book ends.

Hope this helps.
