Re: Eye protection, Plus 1. Doctor using a dremel tool to remove a chip from your eye  . I wear glasses all the time, including prescription safety glasses w/ side shields and I'm the only one on my street that I know of that wears a full face shield when operating the weed whacker! Still, I have at least a couple of extractions under my belt and to this day, whenever I get an eye check up, my eye doctor mumbles, "yup, there's that rust spot".

On at least two occassions I have gotten stuff in my eyes while taking a shower after dirty jobs (crud washes down from your hair and into your eyes), so I have learned to be careful until after I have washed my hair out well.

I bought myself a Drill Doctor for Christmas with Suzy's money (it's all her money according to her) and I second the motion! A nice thing about the Drill Doctor is that you can "thin the web on/split the point on bits. This allows you to sharpen commercial cobalt drills (available surplus on EBay and other places). Cobalt drills are much better than carbon (not worth owning IMHO) and High Speed Steel (HSS).

I've only been to the "Dremel Doctor" once. That was more than enough for me. It's polycarbonate lenses for me 100% of the time.

Cheers,

Gus

+1 Polycarbonate, with AR (abrasion resistance) and AG (anti-glare).

The first trailer I built for a customer trailer was built with a stainless steel skin. I love it.

I simply got a low speed router (amazon.com) and a milling bit, some air sheers, and a nibbler. It is a bit harder on the tools but it lasts forever without oxidizing. $60 for that price is worth it even if you don't use it on your trailer! That is a great price.

Here are a few pics of the trailer I built with stainless sides & top. You can find more here: http://www.overlandtrailer.com/purchase-a-trailer-2/the-58-heald/

thanks for all the info, I appreciate it a lot.

My dad and brother are optometrists so eye safety is big in our family. but reminders never hurt for important stuff like that!

I have never heard of using sugar, how does it help?

I don't know the reason sugar helps cutting through stainless, but it does.

I did not believe until I saw and tried myself.

It won't cost you anything to try it, just dip you bit into a cup of sugar ,drill dip repeat every5-10 seconds of drilling.

Let me know your results.

The tip originally came from an electrician that got it from his son that works in a waste water plant, they have a lot of stainless in the water treatment plants.

My guess is that the sugar is able to take a lot of heat and absorb it. With enough heat it turns to candy, and rather than cook off it just clings and remelts to maintain lubrication.

Pure speculation on my part, but those are not bad qualities to have for a cutting solution so I suppose it could be the reason.
