Slow down there working on it. You rolled out a bit to far. :lol: Got the 165/15 tire on another project. Pretty light and narrow. You can get them for about 65.00 mounted.

I'm running the 13 inch HF tires that came with the trailer for now but would like to change to 14/s with a different fender....the HF ones are squared and I like the round fenders.....lookin for a couple Harley FL front fenders that might work
If you see my harley on a trailer,,,,call the police cause it's being stolen...

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the metric sizing goes like this;

235/75-15

235 = tread width in mm (235 divide by 25.4 mm/in = 9-1/4 inch wide (not to be confused with overall tire width at the bulge)

75 = aspect ratio in percent, so 9-1/4 x .75 = 6-15/16 inch side wall height

15 = rim diameter

So overall diameter equals 15 + (2 x 6-15/16) = 28-7/8 inch tall

I think that's how it works, IIRC.

That's correct. And as you say, that's the width of the tread, not the overall tire width. You'll have some "squish" I'm the tire when it is under load, so the actual tire height will reduce by a half inch or so.

I believe that is the overall tire width, mounted without a load on it.....otherwise known as section width. Tread width is nearly always narrower than section width.

for example, I have a Cooper ST Maxx's in 285/75/16 on my truck. 285 mm = 11.22 inches, that is the section width. The tread width is just a little over 9.25 inches. To confirm I dropped by Coopers website and found that tire has a section width of 11.15 inches and a tread of 9.3 inches.

Your 235 should have a section width of 9.25 inches and a tread in the 7 to 8 inch wide range depending on manufacturer....

That calculation is right for nominal tire size, though it is section width, not tread width.

But the problem is, the tire may be a different actual size! If you look on Carlisle's web site at the different trailer tires they offer, the same size tires have diameters up to an inch different - and that's just different models from one manufacturer.

On those fenders, I've done 205 75 R 15's in them....It's up to you how you want it to look, but a 14 might not have enough "fill" for it. Nothing beats good curb appearance. A small wheel/tire combo in a nice fender, just looks funky to me. Just my opinion. Doug

Lol, that was the main reason I swapped out the stock 14" in my Ranger - there was FAR too much space around 'em and it looked silly, even with 205/70s (the biggest I could find).

Mine have all started as tent trailers with the 'stupid little short fat things... 20.5 x 8 x 10' that Paul has. I'm building the wheel wells to take 12" instead.
I want to build the next trailer from scratch so it'll be 235/75/15 on matching rims.

Anyone try using a pair of fronts from a motorbike ?
Probably have to fab a stub axle, but it would keep the weight down.
