Need geometry help to get a measurement

Postby 2bits » Fri Aug 17, 2012 9:45 pm

I posted this in my build thread but I thought this might get a bit more exposure...

I am wondering what the length of one piece of aluminum roof would be from front to rear, using something similar to the Honeymoon House Trailer profile that is in my signature, with a total length of 7 foot, and a total height of 4 foot. 7 plus 4 is 11 and I know I will lose some length in the curve just not sure how much, and I zero CAD ability.

My issue is that I am on a tight time schedule and I can get a 4x10 sheet of black aluminum for $60 and I would do that to be able to just lay ONE roof sheet over with no joints to waste my time with. Otherwise I will use the 4x7 sheets I already have and have one joint. We are only talking a one foot difference so I thought I would ask!

Thanks!
Thomas

Thomas -

CAD and Sketchup are beyond my knowledge so I just measured my 1947 KIT which has a profile very similar to your sketch.

It is however 8 foot long but does have the same 4 foot high sides.

I think you said there would not be a hatch but I took two seprate measurents.

From the front of the frame to the hinge is 105" and from the hinge to the back of the frame 55" for a total of 160" or 13' - 4". On your 7 foot frame the total length of the top skin would probably be about 12'-2" to 12-6."

I see I've got the space next to yours at Loyd Park. See you there. I hope to have my rebuild finished by then also.

Thank you MC! It looks like I was thinking wrong, I was thinking height and length minus the radius. WRONG! It should be height + length + height again! :?

It appears that I will be making a seam, but I am still getting used to the 4 foot wide idea and that I do not need to lay my sheets sideways and cut off a big chunk like I had to do on my last five wide. There is alot to be said for a 4' wide (If you are single!) So I will only need to make one joint which will be fine, I just need to make sure the joint is able to fall on a roof spar which which should be easy enough.

I do not have high hopes for getting my build done right now, I am moving my mobile home to my new land next Thursday and it will take me about a week to get settled enough to start on the build again, and I am out of vacation time so it will all need to be done in the evenings after work and on the weekend, so It is highly doubtful that I will have it done. I am shooting for "done with no doors" right now... I can deal with that!

I do love that spot though, the group area is sparse with trees and it is usually fairly warm... (ok HOT) during the day, and while on the map it looks far, there is that little path through the field (Just don't inhale) that leads quickly to the sites!

Thanks for the reply and I will see you there one way or another!!! nice KIT by the way! I love it!
