Hurriguard panels - anyone ever use 'em?

Postby nelsonrx » Thu Aug 30, 2012 6:48 pm

Was strolling around my local Lowe's and ran across these: http://www.lowes.com/pd_62215-66308-622 ... facetInfo=

They're polycarbonate panels, 0.63 inches thick and available in 4x8 foot sheets. They are pricey ($100ish per panel) but they're meant to withstand flying debris during hurricanes AND they have a 10 year UV warranty. Looks like Lowes even sells some aluminum hardware meant to bolt these suckers to your windows, which could be modded to for use on teardrops...

Been thinking about take a stab at an A-frame (I know, the devil is in the details with these things  ); however, I was thinking these might be great for the roofing panels. They are relatively clear, so I imagine a nice coat of paint would be good, but at least they are uber uber light, strong as heck, and already UV resistant.

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like the kind of twinwall (or maybe triplewall) polycarbonate they sell here in the UK for conservatory roofing.

Price wise it's normally around £50 (35 dollars?) so 100 loooks a little high!

Of course yours might be way stronger.

Are they really 0.63 inches thick (over 1/2") or are they really 0.063" (1/16") thick?

Because if it's 1/16", it's about 1/2 that price here http://www.eplastics.com/Lexan_Clear_Po ... nate_Sheet

But eplastics doesn't include shipping.....

They are really 0.63 inches thick. If I remember when I was at Lowes' the other day correctly, they were triple wall construction. Extremely light! I've seen them on homes before (and on greenhouses). Would definitely take some planning, but given the strength and UV protection, might be something to consider. I'm still trying to figure out a way to come up with a design for the folding roof panels, particularly the drip edge that the vertical wall pieces join to form the enclosed structure...
