Time to Make Trailer "Prettier"

Postby foolsfortune » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:34 pm

I haven't been around here in a while but saw a trailer on Ebay that made me want to add to mine...

Here's a shot of the side and back end of the one I saw....

I'll post a pic of mine in the daylight tomorrow. I need to find a big a** cargo door like that one. The seller told me it was just a large cargo door that he found on Ebay and converted but I can't find one like it anywhere...
Update tomorrow :-)

I think that's what I will end up doing. Right now I'm torn between cleaning my trailer up, selling it off and starting over or making adjustments to it to bring it up to what I want.

The most important factor is time (there never seems to be enough) but I would love to have something nice to sleep in when I do my yearly bike tour in July.

Either way, I'll need to get my butt moving with proper wall construction for a smooth, good looking, durable, leak free trailer ASAP. I'll get a pic or 2 up tomorrow so the experts can advise me on
making this make over happen.

Cheers

Alrighty. So the plan is to clean this sucker up this weekend and put a coat of paint on what ever parts need a coat of paint and then post it for sale. If it sells, I'll start a new one and do it right this time. If ti doesn't sell, I'll strip it and do it right this time ;-)

Here are a couple shots of it as it sits now....side....

and here is the back end....

...and here is the inside...yes, the maid should likely show up a bit more often!

I am trying to work with the builder of the trailer in the image above (the "pretty" trailer). He is a 20 year vet of the RV biz in Elkhart Indiana and uses techniques from the big trailers on his little trailers. He's not real keen to sell plans or share too much but has agreed to share with me. Very slow, but nice guy.

Here's what I know so far....

- His inside dims (48" high, 46" wide, 95" long) --> Mine are (52 1/8" tall, 43 1/2" wide, 89 7/8" long)
- Sealed with Sika flex
- Filon Skinned
- Walls are plywood plus paneling and fiberglass (total 1 1/8" thick)
- Door is large cargo door that he converted

So, while I await information from the chap, there must be some info that we can uncover to make over my little trailer. I need to:

- Have a large rear door like his (as close to full width as I can get.
- Have it be 100% waterproof
- Get the outside looking slick like his
- Get the inside looking slick like his

I'm on the hunt for:
- proper frame prep for painting (mine is black and flaking off)
- floor construction with waterproofing
- Wall/spar contruction
- Roof construction, bending
- Sealing
- Outer shell (Filon) application
- Door construction techniques (in case I can't find a cargo door...I've had no luck)

There's a good start.

Ok, no replies from the guy so I need to figured this out on my own. I also have decided to post it for sale and start over as I believe it will be faster (and more fun)

Here's what she looks like inside now with the help of a little paint...

Almost presentable!

Ok...off to find the PROPER way to build walls rather than big fat 2x2's. Oh...first a question. The inside of my current trailer is taller than the pretty trailer. I assume tiny trailers are kept short to make use of a single 4x8 sheet of Filon with no seams but I really like the headroom...how can I get around that?

Thanks

Ok...ateempts to sell the trailer have failed. The few that have looked at it seem to be more but off by the fact that it looks home made rather than the price.

I have a squishy spot on the floor at the tongue end and one in the front lower vertical wall. If I do a rebuild, it won't be until the spring now so here's what I'd like to do...

I fastened aluminum straping around the bottom of the trailer but didn't seal it well so water got in behind it.

- Cut the squishy parts out and put new wood down
- Sand the outside smooth (I let some of the fiberglass resin run a bit)
- Apply something to the outside that will 1) fill knot holes and cracks 2) smooth and level the surface
- Give it one more coat of UV resistant white paint

What can I use to coat it that will sand nice and smooth and allow paint to adhere? Something like bodyfiller but not body filler as it will shrink and expand and crack.

Thanks
