spare tire

Postby cpowell243 » Sun Feb 17, 2013 11:48 am

I was on the newbie site and decided to move to the builder's forum. I am building a Grumman 2 have seen designs with a spare tire mounted below the floor. Is the the best location and, if so, how is this done? Other options?

In my opinion under the floor is the best place, but not the most convenient to get at if you need it. I just mounted a 12" spare off my Harbour Freight trailer under the rear right behind the axle. It fits perfectly between the last cross members. I just used 3, 1/2" X 5" bolts . Fender washers on the top and Nylock nuts on the bottom. These tires are not very heavy. If I had a car size tire I would do it differently.

Best location would be how it effects balance of trailer (tongue weight)... Probable best to determine location after build is pretty much complete and trailer is loads for normal expedition...

For securing spare under trailer I think the "winch" concept that many pickup trucks use may be answer... You just slide tire under trailer and connect cable from winch to tire and pull it up into place.... You might have to spend some "salvage yard" time to find something that will work for you...

I just throw my spare in the back of the TV along with my emergency road kit (spare parts and tools). However, I use the spare and emergency kit for my utility trailer that uses the same tire and axle. Spare tire and kit sit on a mover's dolly and roll under the TD when not in use.
