UGH - 1 Door Warped

Postby Classic Finn » Fri Feb 16, 2007 12:47 pm

Dear friends, I thought to ask you for some guidance...

I went to look out into the Porta Garage, and I had 1 Door off the Voyager..
And standing upright against the tear..(mistake).

I brought it into the house to do some work on it.. Ok its been outisde in that repsect that as you know my Portagarage is in no way heated.. So temps change...Now in a warm house temps change again.

I brought it into the warm house and saddly enough the door is a bit warped.. My wife noticed it before I did.. Its not bad but enough to see if we look..

Can it be saved or do I have to make a new door? Unfortunately nice Mahogany veneer has been applied to it and of course aluminum outside.

Will it straighten out ? How can I straighten it.. It does have the window installed too and the moulding around it...

UGH Im saddened... Ok a new door can be made with extra hours and finishing but I had to ask before starting...

Should I remove the moulding take out the window and clamp it between 2 boards or even ply ? Will it straighten up that way?

Oh my. :o :(

Sorry to hear that. I might have the same problem. I have left both of mine inside the house but leaning up against the wall. Of course they are not finished like yours.

Hope someone can tell you how to fix it!!

Hi there Champ! (MK) :D

I guess I shouldnt have left it standing up ....  On this particular door there is only 1 coat of Marine Varnish.. And I was going to do another coat after it would have been in the house a few days.. to dry.

Ok we do have extra ply to make another but to press the mahogany veneer with the huge press, I need to take it to my buddy who has the equipment to do it correctly..Mk maybe you remember the huge press we used and the large vacuum tables here..

I shouldve never left it just standing... and outside on top of it.. Maybe Danny or Doug or.... will reply ... :worship:

Heikki,
Is there anyway your buddy can put it back in the press and take out the warp? Sorry to hear it happened.

Geee now that you mention it ... That big press will take the warp out of anything really... It weighs tons... Ha! I didnt even think of that but for sure..you are correct... Ol Age and Memory just dont go together....

Now the only thing is that window is silicioned in place.. whats the best way to get that out..Rubber Silicone... I mean it is sealed...

Hiya!!!

Yea, What Mrs M said. Have them press it out for ya!!!

The silly thing with me is, I thought you were supposed to store them on end :DOH2: .... and I didn't know until today that you are not.

So when I get home, I'll find out if they have warped.

Good luck on your :duh: !!

Pocket knife is the way I get stuff unstuck. There might be a better way though. If you get all the trim off and cut that silicone away it might work especially with the vacuum bagging.

Yup that be the one...    8) If I can get the silicone off plus the molding which is easy I think we can save it... Just think its not even done....

The entire voyager needs one coat of finish on it yet.. then it will be very nice..

Heikki, it looks like you are dealing with two differently sealed surfaces, one aluminum and the other finished wood. The moisture will be absorbed more on the wood side even though it is sealed. If it's bowed on the outside sightly (convex) the hinge and door latch just might pull it up along with weather striping. I would store them inside wrapped in a heavy blanket. Beautiful veneer,. Is that Honduran Mahogany? :D Danny

Heikki, How bad is it warped? Maybe you can just put some 2x4's under the edges and put some heavy weight on top and let it sit a couple of days in the house. It might warp back without taking it all apart...... ;)

Dear Friends John and Danny

If you look at the door from the outer edge (mouldings) direct... it is slightly rounded from out going in .. Let me see if I can get a photo as to what I mean..

In the middle its straight but getting towards the hinge area to handle it bows...very slightly inward.
