The Plan ... so far

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby GPW » Sun Apr 23, 2006 6:44 pm

the woodworking is basically DONE .... except for skinning the hatch ... I'm going to suspend the hatch frame slightly above the body (sides) and shim the frame square in the opening ... hoping to keep everything aligned when I glue/nail the skin on ...Then we're done with the fun stuff ....
Got the roof vent installed, the windows fitted , the hatch cut in the galley wall, galley shelf (lightweight) installed and braced , and the ac cut out and framed, and the electrical box constructed...everything glued up ,and secured ...
Next the fiberglassing the seams... the plan , 6" wide heavy FG tape and a good resin on the side/roof junction to keep things together and watertight ...roof seams too...then the poly bath ..... This all is happening soon , because there's only 5 weeks left .....

Mad Jack ...pics for ya' ..... not too exciting though , just subtle changes ...

ps . went to HD today for supplies , got all electrical , ss screws, and some nice aluminum C channel (3/4" ) for those shelf edges... asked about a shore /external power plug .... Was Dat ?????

...If y'all have an Academy Sporting Goods around there, they have 'em for 10bucks, the one I got came from Waytekwire.com...about 15 bucks...I have seen the same ones for upto 30 bucks in some marine catalogs...

Thanks Mad Jack , you da' man !!!!!! I thought I was going to be able to find one easily around here.... hahahahaha
Academy about 10 miles away ... Many Thanks !!!!! 36 days left ....
have to order some TD trim pieces (aluminum ) from TD guys , none around here suitable , or available ...just door stuff needed ...The straight (nonbending ) pieces for shelf edges , etc, were at the HD , and CHEAP ...They have a nice 3/4" angle stock than could be very usefull ...and cheap enough to experiment with ...
the solar panels aren't in yet ...???? HF must be slow ...???? going to the paint store , to try to find a paint for trailer roofs , used it many years ago , probably was lead with asbestos , and not made anymore ... seemed to be somewhat fiberous and perfect for a ply roof finish .... I thought about Line -X , but way too expensive ... the old timers used canvas , schmaybe fiberglass???? seems like some skin strength would be helpfull on my 1/4" ply top....I dunno ....

I really wanted something "fiberous " to coat the roof , I envision the luan in the southern La. sun , probably will see cracking first , then swelling and leaking/rotting, and that's in the first week ...hahahahaha ....felt we needed a skin type of thingie' to prevent the cracking or at least prolong the onset of ...I dunno , for the 20 years I need this to last (If I'm Lucky ) , the fence paint would probably work fine , I'll check it out , Thanks Mad Jack .... coffee's still on ...

Got the body side ply outside splice braces /awning mounts done .... screwed and glued (LNHDCA) cut out of 3/4" ply in an airfoil shape , not all together too ugly ...and now a place to mount that homemade awning(s)...got some 2"aluminum tubing , perfect for the job ... when not being used it will roll up on the tube , or get removed and stowed inside outta' the rays ...Gonna' make the awning out of that nice striped canvas from the fabric store... very traditional ...Imagine me being traditional ...????With all the radical designs , that I've committed to paper , this one looks like a 40's model (cept' for the windows)... Wait till next time !!!!hahahahahahaha
Got the hatch skinned , I kept putting it off as being difficult , I was doing it by myself .......... Just said F it and grabbed a sheet of 1/4" luan , ran some glue over the framework , slapped on the ply and started nailing with serrated panel nails.... Wow was it EASY .... the slight bent of the hatch was absolutely no problem ...I can kick myself for procrastinating on that .... DUH !!!!
MJ ...pics soon
Got a 50 yard roll of 4" W, 6oz. fiberglass cloth from a friend .... way more than I need for this one (only need 60 feet ) so plenty for the next one too ... " the Airliner" .. now I have to find some epoxy to stick it down , Gallons available around here for about a croaker .... (West ) kinda pricey , but won't go to waste ...

Ira , Thanks !!!! Suicide Door!!! I Love em !!! Dad had a 60's Lincoln Continental ....My Silverado has em' on the EX cab ....Suicide knobs on the steering wheel .... with the risque' pictures too ...hahahahha guess I'm just too old for my own good ....
Don't know all the pitfalls of the suicide door , I guess I'll find out now ......hahahahahaha
One door only on the curb side (US).... Large windows for punchout ... large rear galley access hatch from the cabin (cooler size) for rear egress ...This one is for Hurricane evacuation .... The next one will be for pure FUN ... hehehe.. I told the old lady that the second one could carry all her shoes in an evacuation ....she said it wouldn't be big enough ...

Been raining (Alot ) here , finally !!! TD is in the driveway , covered up ... plenty of time to work on sketches of the paint scheme... Ready to glass the seams and paint .... either it dries out this week or we'll have to find a place indoors (?) to do the outside finish work and "Dry in "...
Found some really nice 1/8" masonite with a very nice smooth white finish on one side(Loews) ... perfect for my ceiling requirements and now I can use that nice white edge trim that they sell ...got some sheets of 1/2" blu styro for insulation ... easy , and plenty for here...OOPS !!! Sun's coming out ....

Used the inclement weather to work on the insulation inside .... Pretty easy , cut to size , stick it between the ribs , good fit eliminates the need for fasteners/Glue , besides it ain't goin' anywhere with the ceiling on ...
MJ , I promise I'll have pics for next time...Sunny today ...

Fraid that won't get ya there. A little glitch in your copy.
Try this.

If I had the money and energy I would do both.

Looks good

G, if I was doing what your are doin' I would tape the seams and then paint the whole thing with a marine urethane or epoxy paint...something like Ezpoxy or Armorpoxy...I probably wouldn't use AL trim unless I was looking for "that" look...

MJ,

What do you mean by taping the seams? Got a picture of that so I can work out how to do mine? Sounds a bit easier than trimming with aluminium.

Thanks

Eski.
