(The Puffin) New Tiny Trailer

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby steve wolverton » Sun Oct 22, 2006 1:02 pm

A few more pics from yesterday.

Image

The left (port) side of the camper finished. The top strake (rub rail) is used to attach the two pieces of plywood. The top piece is 48" and the bottom is 24". The lower strake is only cosmetic. I will paint the strakes a dark gray, and I will paint the area between them black. The top portion and very bottom (5" or so below bottom strake) will be painted white.

The black stripe area between the strakes should be a good place to put some vinyl letters of the camper name. I think I'm going to name it 'The Puffin.'

Image

The flooring was built using 1/2" plywood. It sits on top of 5 2x4's for the frame. It's not mounted on the trailer in the photo - that why it looks offcenter. The floor measures 96" x 72".

Image

Picture of the first side going up. It's starting to look camper-like!

Image

I used 2x4's ripped in half for the door frame and bottom mounting on the sides. Everything pre-drilled & countersunk. I will be installing 3 window - one on each side, and one in the door.

Thanks for the peek inside Steve. Looks like it will be a fun design. I think Puffin will be a great name since I can picture it.

Steve
Just got back from camping and find you built half a trailer while I was loafing. Looking good as usual. :applause:
Can't wait to get back from LCG to see what you get done next weekend.

RAYVILLIAN - I was hoping to have a lot more done today, but chores and house painting got in the way.

I ran out of screws, so next weekend is more screws, few more spars, and I'll start working on the interior.

It's gettin' groovy now.

Remember Murphy's law, if it can happen it will happen sooner and later. I think you need to do something about the tire change option some how.

SkipperSue - Yup, Mr. Murphy sucks. I just went out and measured.

Tire/wheel is about 4.5" wide, I have 5" of clearance from the wheel to the side. Just like I planned. Actually, it's a happy coincidence. It will work fine like it is. Plus it looks damn cool with the tires hidden like that.

Ok, now that I see the picture I can see that you shouldn't have any problems changing a flat. Carry on my son. :R :R

SkipperSue - Not offended at all - just the opposite. I appreciate everyone asking questions and spotting things that may cause problems later, or suggesting things to make it an even better camper.

Steve...it's looking good. Did you use the Lil Guy profile?

BobR - I didn't use the Lil Guy profile on purpose - but it looks like the same profile. I used a 24" radius on the front, and a 36" radius on the back. Not sure of the Lil Guy dimensions offhand, but they sure look very similar.

sdtripper2 - LOL! Yeah, I've read all about the emulsion horror stories. I'm actually going to use some exterior latex paint to paint the bottom of mine with. Since it's staying in the garage, I don't need anything as extreme as emulsion or epoxy. ;)

It should be nice and messy though.

Gerdo - Thanks. I'm going to finish this inside this weekend. I hope to have the doors (outside & bathroom) finished this weekend too.

Paint will start going on the first weekend in November.

I really think I could have built this camper in one week if I didn't have to work & go to school. ;)
