Exterior Paint on Tear Drops - calling those who've done it.

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Keith, a lot of the members here have used latex house paint (primer and cover coat) over epoxy on homebuilt boats and teardrops. Do a search and you should find a lot of info.

Yes, high gloss enamel.

Hi Keith
If you want your teardrop to look like a "house" then house paint and a roller will work fine. BUT... If you want a tear that matches your car, you will need to devote many hours filling with body filler (bondo is a brand name for a body filler) priming ,blocking and painting with a good quality automotive urethane and perhaps clear coat . I spent around $800.00 just for the materials I used to paint mine BUT...... It don't look like a house ;)

Good greif Gaston.. that is BEAUTIFUL.... is that paint right on wood (filled and smoothed of course) or do you have glass and resin under that.

Keith,
I used marine topside enamel on my trailer. I bought the paint, handed the cans to my Dad (retired house painter) and headed for my first teardrop gathering minus the trailer. When I returned home, my trailer looked like this.

It was painted with a brush.

I'm with Gaston on this...it's something you are pulling down the road. It will require different coatings as it is subjected to a lot of different stuff than a house...rocks, sand, grit, grease from overlubed drivelines on trucks, salt spray, etc... all at 70 MPH....If you shoot it with an automotive paint, you can match your tow vehicle if you want, and it can be washed and waxed like a car...just depends on the look you want, how much time and money you want to put into it. If you have the gun and the compressor......... Doug

PS...if you are picky enough to worry about 3/16 out of square on the frame...there is no way you're going to be happy with latex...just my thoughts....

So... IF I fix the 3/16" on the trailer I better have a dang nice paint job...if I DON'T fix the 3/16" then anything will work  .... well, I have the gun now, and the compressor... $800 for paint  yeah, that wasn't put into the budget and since this isn't a "city" TD I can't tax for it  , I might have to go w/ like BPS Tractor enamel (or Marine Topside enamel, etc.) and a clear coat... time to fill, sand, etc. I have... all I wanna do is make Minden...if I don't have a pretty paint job I'll cover the thing 100% in bumper stickers.

I used several coats of acrylic exterior paint on my roof. I then put 2 coats of Dura-color canned silver spray paint (from Autozone). That gives it the aluminum appearance. After that I sprayed a coat of clear plasti-dip (liquid plastic). That has worked well for me.
It has been in the sun during transit and camping and has been covered all of the other times.

I totally agreed with Gaston and Doug Hottie , because they have gorgeous teardrops!!! My case was the $$$ one.... I didn't have the $800 for the lustre finish... but I love that look!!!

I figured with the paint, it could be painted over, stripped and redone or covered with aluminum later....

just 2 cents
