Thanks for the idea.

Spray undercoating

Postby Dee Bee » Wed Jun 20, 2007 6:15 am

Instead of using roofing tar to undercoat the deck, I purchased spray automotive undercoating. Quick easy and not messy. I used five spray cans to cover the deck. It is now two years old and holding up well.

I was pleased with the way the spray undercoating went on. It entered cracks, covered knotholes, and could be sprayed more thickly as needed in a second coat.

I used roof tar and I won't us it again. It doesn't stick to the edge grain of plywood very well. I'd use regular house paint if I was doing it over again.

A little further digging found that it's an asphalt emulsion... might as well go with roofing cement if you're going to go that route.

Hey, excuse the hijack, but forget the teardrops, I want an 'American Building for Furriners' training course.

You have substantial size buildings just sitting on timbers on the ground? Did we not send over a good enough supply of 'rot' (or its posh brother 'timber decay') on the Mayflower?

The building on the left looks to be sitting on a concrete pad.

Not uncommon to see them on concrete pads or blocks in low moisture areas.

Remember the Japanese that we interred here during WWII?

Well, we still have an ample supply of those buildings to house the NEXT group of foreigners who piss us off.

But you're safe, Andrew, because you speak English. And that makes all of the difference in the world here.
Here we go again!

I'm with Bruce...but it all sort of depends on the environment that you are camping in..I just used a good oil based primer and I actually poured the black oil based paint on and mopped it on, with a brush....I recently did 3K miles in rain and had no problems with it, easier than messing with the tar based sealants. but that is just my experience with it. It seems that everytime I open a can of that tar stuff, it's all over everything including the dog!!! Doug

We used the SealBest. Will keep everyone informed how well it holds up over time.

The RV joints around here all recommended it. Figured if they use it on the big RV's it's surely hold up on ours.

I went over to Miller Paint here in Portland, they manufacture and sell paint, have done so for over 100 years, a good place to buy paint and ask questions, lots of old painter guys working there. I described what I'm doing, the old painter guy recommended oil based primer and spar enamel, a quart of each. Prime, wait 48 hours, paint, wait 24 hours, paint again. I've used spar enamel before and it is very durable.

Anyone ever try this stuff? I used it on the roof of my travel trailer, it sealed really well.

Andrew - in some areas, homeowners build sheads or out buildings set on concrete blocks or patio pads so they are not taxed as an added structure. No tea party included!
