Clamps

Postby prohandyman » Sat Nov 03, 2007 4:58 pm

OK your just going to explain how those clamps work, Or maybe I'll have to plan a trip to see them in person. Or both

I like the looks

Scott
If you look closely at the picture, the clamps are screwed to the sub-panel 1/4" or so away from the new strip, and then just turn the cam so that it applies pressure to the strip to hold it tight while the glues dries. Pretty simple idea from juneauDave

WOW, THAT'S PRETTY!!

1) Did you rip the strips from a board or did you buy a load of cedar strips and glue them together?

2) How wide and thick is each strip?

3) Why glue only 6" at a time?

4) How come you don't live closer to me?

Yes, I ripped the individual strips from a solid 1x10, 12 ft . long, gluing them separately. The strips are about 3/16" thick off the saw, and then once sanded, end up arounds 1/8".
I only glue about six at a time because for one, they get tougher to clamp tightly together with any more than that, and two, they tend to arch upward more than I prefer, which then becomes tougher to weight down evenly. Thats my system. I'm sure Steve Frederick and others might do it differently. It is still easier than doing a kayak or canoe.

Yea, that did turn out nicely. Once upon a time I thought about making a teardrop out of pine 2x4s ripped like you did but the cedar is a whole lot nicer. Keep the photos coming!

ProHandy........ JuneauDave,

Do you guys lay the strips in a "fanfold" layout or just stack each strip on top of one another?

Does that make sense?

The strips are just stacked in my case, glued to each other and the sub-panel.

I have been givin an old surfboard that I thought would look nice up on top of an aluminum rack, so I'm looking for someone that can weld aluminum.

What to do with left over strip pieces? Might as well make cabinet doors!
