Registering a Teardrop

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby Ratfinkster » Thu Nov 22, 2007 9:46 am

Hey there, Gadget Man and TPMcGinty. Another Minnesota builder here. Thanks for the heads up on MN registration. Just starting mine, building from scratch. I was also wondering how to register it, but now I know thanks to all the fellow teardroppers. Got to get busy, need it done by Back to the 50's in June.

I'm also from minnesota and all i did was register it as the harbor freight trailer. But mine is also more of a cargo trailer/sleeping quaters. here's a link

Hey everyone from MN! It's nice to know there are a few of us on here. Maybe we can get enough of us to start a MN chapter of the Tear Jerkers or maybe we could get a few people from our neighboring states too. None of the 5 state region seems to be covered.

dave i know if its a popup you dont have to have it registered, it states that clearly, everything else is somewhat vague

Can you tell me where it states that clearly? I would like to get a copy of that from the "book" and have my son keep it in the popup.

Better yet, I would like to see him build a tear.

I registered mine as a utility trailer since the title was for the trailer (not the teardrop).

I still had some problems since the "manufacturer" was named "Central Puchasing" through Harbor Freight tools.

After several minutes (55minutes) they finally called Indianapolis BMV and let it go through. Whew!!, I didn't dare tell them what the "utility trialer would be hauling. (so I didn't)

BTW, I got charged $35 extra for a late registration. After 30 days from the sale, they charge for late registration. I told them it wasn't a trailer until I put it together, but that didn't make any difference. Oh well, I felt lucky to get the Teardrop registered so I didn't fuss.

My Red Trailer came with a certificate of title. So I goes to the official government harassment station, otherwise known in Indiana as the License Branch, to register it as a utility trailer. The functionary behind the counter was concerned that the manufacturer "Chung King" or some such name from China wouldn't come up in her computer. Surprisingly it was there and she was able to process my registration and title without a problem. I would hate to think though what might be involved if I told them it was an RV. I imagine electrical and plumbing inspectors, the fire marshal, and a plethora of other agencies involved. Not to mention getting my hands slapped for tearing the label of the mattress.
