what glue to use?

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Glues in addition

Postby darockrider » Sat May 07, 2005 12:45 am

Just a addition to my comment that whenever possible I don't just glue but all use a fastener. I really like the deck screws but have also used the ribbed panel board type of nails for places where screws would be to much!

I bought a case (12 ea) of the larger tubes delivered to my home (UPS) for $78. That figures out to $6.50 per tube delivered. The average builder would probably want to purchase the smaller 10 oz tubes. Below is a link to the site of the manufacturer and a picture of the description.

Hi Ol Timer,

I've purchased a couple of tubes of the PL adhesive. I'm wondering if there is any special way to seal the tube to keep it from drying out between building sessions? While it's not that expensive per tube, I don't want to have to throw a lot of unused glue away because it has hardened in the tube.

use an old plastic clothes hanger. cut a 2inch or so piece, and stick it in. the hole. the pl wont adhere to it.

Well, with those things you wouldn't have any little caulking tubes running around

As I read through this thread, I'm reminded of the Yankee Workshop. Norm builds a lot of outdoor furnature with screws and something he calls "marine adhesive." Does anybody know what that is and how that compares to the alternatives such as the construction adhesive or elmers Ultimate mentioned above?

DAP Weldwood resorcinol glue

DAP Weldwood resorcinol glue
Anyone ever use this glue? Not as easy as the one-part glues, but it definitely forms a bond much stronger than the wood. It's recommended for building boats (Stevenson Weekender)

I have used resorcinal glue for years while building plywood over frames boats and kayaks. I think that it is one of the easiest and best there is, at least for my type of building. The only drawback that one might have to using it is that it's 2-part reqiring mixing and that it is a deep red in color and it is virtually impossible to get the stain out. This wouldn't be a problem in hidden joints.

In answer to "marine adhesives" here is a marine adhesive that I have used in the past with good results. http://www.sikaindustry.com/tds-ipd-sikaflex291-us.pdf It is a one part polyurethane. Read total sheet.

I switched to the polyurethane that I had refer in an earlier post as the above mentioned one is about 4x as expensive (naturally being Marine) and I see very little if any difference.

Well so far on the six-pack I have used, Elmers Probond, Titebond II, Liquid nails (heavy duty), PL Construction adhesive (which BTW is a real bugger to get off your hands but holds really well), Gorilla glue, and the new elmers Gorilla glue clone.
All have good and bad aspects, I found the PL is GREAT for skinning, the Gorilla glue seemed best for attaching the framing together, and the pro bond and tite bond II were best for doing my glue lam work.

ALL btw of these glues were used in conjunction with various screws, ribbed nails, staples, clamps, straps, weights, braces, jugs of sand, weights from my weight set, 4-33" super swamper tires, homemade contraptions, and even the combined weight of 3 of my children to hold certain pieces down while glue dried. (It was quite a feat to get 3 kids to sit still for 2 hours, but cartoon dvd in the player helped there)
You want to build WHAT?????
