If you can find someone in your area that sells screw posts for binding they work great for the hatch.
I've use them with the RV insert molding on 3 teardrops so far without any problems. :D Danny

Where do I start looking for those Denny?

Hatch

Postby Chris D » Tue Nov 03, 2009 4:20 pm

Danny,
I have used something like that for fastening euro cabinets together. They would work great on the hatch!!!!! Great Idea. I have also seen someone use t-nuts for the hatch also but I like your Idea better.
What would I ask for.

Thanks Chris D

I don't know who came up with the names for them, but they are called "sex bolts" or "Chicago bolts".

Gage, they are used for making folders with three holes punched like a 3 ring binder. Try office supply stores and if you have a good hardware store other than the Home Depots or Lowes you might find them there. They are available on the Internet too. I get mine locally from http://www.mclendons.com/ . :D Danny

Scrapebooking supply stores usually have em' too. Mrs starleen uses them all the time to bind scapebooks

and they are sometimes also known as Chicago screws when used on horse tack. They can often be found at feed stores and the like. Online they can be found at horse.com and a few similar sights; here's a example, $2.95 for a 10 pack
http://www.horse.com/Chicago-Screws-(10-Pack)-BPN12.html
with a little looking they can be found in varying lengths too.

Great idea Danny. I've used these for years in other uses but never would have thought of them for this.

VHB is used in the sign industries for many reasons. If you want a single roll, make friends with your local sign shop owner or contact one of the sign supply housed, Fellers.com, signwarehouse.com, N Glantz, Graphic solutions, or search the yellow pages in your area for "sign supplies"

Jay,

Do you have any comment about how the generic vhb type sign making tapes hold up long term? I have a couple of rolls purchased from a sign supply dealer but the product is not made by 3M. It sounds like most of the trailer manufacturers that use the tape in lieu of mechanical fasteners for attaching aluminum skins probably use 3M brand.

What think you about generic in terms of strength and durability.

Sid, do you know which of these screw posts you ordered.
Looks to me that the 1/$' long posts in Aluminum might work best for holding hatch trim on a hatch paneled in 1/8" luan.

I tried the aluminum ones first and they seemed to strip out too easy. I switch to the stainless and didn't have any problems, but I don't think mine were 1/4"... I think they were shorter, so that may have caused some of the problem.

I've used the 1/4" aluminum ones ( one layer of 1/8" ply.) and they work great if you don't over torque them.
Once I had to buy longer ones and just ground down the threads to fit.
Stainless would be best but isn't available locally for me.
I goop them up to make a nice seal. :D Danny
